BigChange alternative for small UK building firms (2026)

BigChange is built for fleets. Its JobWatch software runs scheduling, quotes, invoices, a CRM and a customer portal, with vehicle tracking built in (BigChange). If you run a fleet of vans doing plumbing and heating, HVAC or facilities work, that combination is the whole point, and it's a strong one.

A small building firm is a different animal. Two vans, a handful of people, and jobs that last six weeks rather than sixty minutes. What costs you money isn't the route between jobs. It's a loose quote, an unsigned variation or a stage payment nobody chased. That's the work EstiMate is built for.

Short version: if vehicle tracking and dispatching a mobile workforce is your daily problem, BigChange is worth a demo. If pricing, contracting and getting paid on projects is the problem, start with EstiMate.

Tracking the vans or tracking the job?

BigChange was founded in Leeds around 2013 by Martin Port, a founder of Masternaut (Wikipedia, BigChange), and was bought by Simpro Group on 25 October 2024 (Simpro). Its strengths reflect who it's built for:

vehicle tracking, part of the core plans (BigChange);
a customer portal where customers request and track jobs and download job cards (BigChange);
invoicing with multiple VAT rates and grouped invoices (BigChange);
pay-by-link and BigChange Pay (BigChange);
integrations with Xero and Sage (BigChange);
BigChange Lightning AI, including the JustAsk chat (BigChange).

Capterra reviewers rate it between 4.3 and 4.5 out of 5 across snapshots, from about 270 reviews (Capterra).

What the price page shows

BigChange lists three plans on one of its landing pages:

Prices checked October 2026, as listed on BigChange's landing page and EstiMate's pricing page. EstiMate Pro is £39.99 a month per business, and its prices are what you pay, with a VAT receipt for every payment.

Three things we couldn't pin down, so ask before you sign:

Per user or per vehicle. The same BigChange page labels these prices both "per user per month" and "per vehicle a month".
VAT. We couldn't confirm whether BigChange's prices include it.
Contract length. We couldn't find one on BigChange's own website. Some Trustpilot reviewers report long contracts, including five-year terms, that they couldn't end early or scale down (Trustpilot).

Capterra reviewers also mention extra charges for implementation, accounting links, replacement fobs and excess tablet data (Capterra). And when Simpro Group launched its Lightning AI platform in May 2026, existing BigChange contracts got the same terms as Simpro's: a 15% uplift offered until 31 May, a 25% rate after that, and annual increases capped at CPI plus 3% (Simpro press release).

A worked example

Say it's priced per user. A five-person building firm on Job Management would pay 5 × £79.95 = £399.75 a month, which is £4,797 a year (VAT basis not stated). On Plus, with the rugged devices, it's 5 × £99.95 = £499.75 a month. EstiMate Pro is £39.99 a month for the business, or £479.88 a year, with one office login and your crew logging time, photos and diary entries through the Site Crew app by QR code or link. That isn't like for like: BigChange's figure includes vehicle tracking (and devices on Plus), which EstiMate doesn't offer, and if several people need their own office logins with roles, EstiMate's answer is Corp, from £249 a month. If BigChange is priced per vehicle instead, the sum depends on your vans, which is one more reason to get the basis in writing.

If tracking is all you're after, Capterra lists BigChange's vehicle tracking on its own at £14.95 a month (Capterra).

On a building job, the money leaks in three places, and they're where EstiMate puts its effort.
